Activities foreseen in the frame of the Project DesertNet II Nowadays, forest fires are, in the south of Portugal, one of the main causes for the processes of the physical and human desertification of the landscape. For that reason, the public efforts that are being done to avoid forest fires and also to reduce its dimensions and environmental impacts can be classified as notable. The University of the Algarve, through the Desertnet II, assures its participation in this effort. It develops a «System of Intervention and Decision Support for an Efficient Management of the Risks and Occurrences of Forest Fires in the Municipality of Alcoutim». The municipality of Alcoutim – located in the north-east of Algarve – was chosen because integrates a pilot zone of action against desertification, and also because it is a territory in which the area that is occupied with forest has increased a lot in the last few years. The «System of Intervention and Decision Support» will allow the vigilance and the fight against the fires to be more effective, namely through equipments that enable the detailed knowledge of the territory and of its particularities, the geographical positioning, the communication and the management of all the available human and equipment resources in each moment. The activities of the University of the Algarve count with the participation of the local and regional institutions that have to keep the vigilance and fight against the forest fires.
