NAGREF- Institute of Olive Tree and Subtropical Plants of Chania
The Olive Tree and Subtropical Plants Institute, located at Chania, Crete, belongs to National Agricultural Research Foundation (N.AG.RE.F.) and with its modern laboratory equipment and significant human resources is able to contribute in the execution of general and particular projects of National or European agricultural research. The main purpose of the Institute is the design and execution of research, pilot and demonstration projects on the problems and modernisation of the cultivation of local crops. The research projects are mainly focused on olive production, citrus crops, subtropical plants, greenhouse vegetables, hydroponics, aromatic plants, food technology, irrigation, plant physiology, plant pathology, entomology, animal production etc. Except from research activities the Institute provides technical support for Communities, Farmers Associations, Cooperatives, to solve local problems, while within the framework of technology transfer organizes conferences and educational events (seminars, conferences, symposia) in collaboration with other institutions. Facilities The experimental plantations of the Institute cover a total area of 50 ha, including cultivar collections of olive trees, citrus, subtropical plants and grapevines. Experimental work is also carried out in a number of plastic and glass greenhouses, controlled environment rooms as well as in fully equipped modern laboratories.
Personnel The Institute currently has a staff consisting of 55 permanent employees and approximately 20 employees (the number fluctuates according to seasonal needs) under contract. Among the permanent staff, there are 10 researchers, 5 agronomists, 10 administrative-finance, 26 lab technicians and 2 technicians.
Actions of the Institute of Olive tree and Subtropical plants for the project DESERTNET II * Detailed analysis of hydrological information of water reserve of Kissamos (capacity of aquifer, flow, abstraction of water). * Collection of existing information on the quality of water. * Collection and analysis of climatic data. * Measurements of the characteristics of the soil for grounds under different land uses. * Creation of micro-reservations to study the effects of overgrazing, extreme climatic events and fires. * Evaluation of the existing situation in the low forest ecosystem (Maquies). * Proposal of actions against desertification in the forest ecosystems. * Increasing general knowledge about the techniques of economy of water. * Review of the irrigation practices and definition of potential improvements. * Insertion of information in the Platform of Services.
