"Remote sensing multitemporal vegetation cover and land use change analysis” The activities of the University of Cagliari, carried out by the “laboratorio TeleGis” have included the building of a common GIS for the project that gathers all the layers made available by the partners. This has allowed many of the Regions to apply the ESAs methodology to identify and map the sensitive area sto desertification. In collaboration with the Tunisian Institut of Arid Regions (IRA) a transept Sardinia-Tunisia that from the North of Sardinia, through all the most important physiographic units, came down to the Atlas chain, and to the semi-arid and arid areas of Maghreb (Tozeur, Tunisia). The study was based on the observation and interpretation of the remote sensing images Landsat 5 TM and Landsat 7 ETM+ and has brought to the production of a system of GIS data bases. The Sardinian transept was an uninterrupted band about 20 kms wide and 300 km long. The Tunisian transept is composed of 20 interpretation windows of 100 sq kms each, distributed along an about 1000 kms long band going from (Nordth Tunisia), crossing the Eastern side of the Atlas chain, the agriculture-based areas of Kairouan, the Chott depressions, to the Northern boundary of the Sahara desert (Tozeur and Douz).A data base censing has also be done; Regional data on desertification issues have been collected and cartographic analysis methodologies in Mediterranean contest has been identified, bringing to the elaboration of data layers used to produce a 1:250.000 scale cartography (MEDALUS Methodology) for some of the project partners.
