The Regional Ministry’s involvement in this project is coordinated by the Environmental Assessment and Information Service, which is part of the General Directorate for Environmental Participation and Information. The Regional Ministry of the Environment has general authority on environmental issues. Its main tasks are managing Andalusia’s natural resources; protecting, managing, and running Protected Natural Areas; studying, protecting and conserving the soil and its vegetation cover, as well as wild flora and fauna; managing water; protecting and enhancing environmental quality; and promoting and encouraging environmental education and awareness-raising activities. Within the frame of the aforementioned area of responsibility, the Regional Ministry of the Environment’s Environmental Assessment and Information Service is in charge of: producing environmental information on specific subjects and coordinating the guidelines and techniques used to compile such information; developing R+D projects both independently and in collaboration with other bodies; facilitating public access to technical environmental information; drawing up, applying and disseminating basic indicators on the state and evolution of the environment in Andalusia. Activity in the frame of the Project DesertNet “Elaboration of diagnostic and monitoring models at regional scale" In the frame of the activity of the Region Andalucia, a study on desertification processes in Mediterranean areas and on monitoring models has been carried out in order to: i) deepen the items of inherited desertification, present desertification and desertification risk; ii) in order to study spatial and temporal evolution of desertification processes. The use of GIS technologies and remote sensing allows to confront different areas and to define desertification indicators and monitoring indicators in the Mediterranean contest. The project integrates to the Regional Desertification Control Plan in order to coordinate all the activities carried out in this contest. Both the present state and the sensitivity to desertification evaluation models elaborated for the Project DesertNet have been meant as a useful instrument to ad just and channel the prevention, mitigation and monitoring measures established in the Plan.
