"Cartography of sensitive areas to desertification; validation of land vocation models and determination of guidelines for the sustainable management of agro-forestry systems in the Mediterranean areas affected by desertification".
The cartography of sensitive areas in Sardinia, already done at a scale 1:250.000 has been updated at a more detailed scale (1:100.000) through the MEDALUS methodology. 16 areas have been studied corresponding to 16 IGM (Istituto Geografico Militare) maps at a 1:100.000 scale. At a 1:250.000 scale the same methodology have been applied on all the regional territory in order to provide a standard cartography comparable with similar regional studies on other areas in the Mediterranean basin. The general objective of the action, that was carried out by NRD, has been to contribute to the definition of monitoring methodologies and indicators for the evaluation of desertification in water erosion affected areas in Mediterranean environments. The specific objectives have been the following: 1. Study and description of the relationship between soil degradation processes and the environmental characteristics of the territory; 2. Measure of various human pressure levels effects by the compared use of different pedologic indicators; 3. Quality and quantity monitoring of channelled erosion processes (rill and gully); The action has been carried out in the pilot area of Bassa Baronia (Nuoro), at two different spatial scale (parcel and local scale) on which different methods and indicators have been applied, on the basis of the specific objectives.
