“Building of a pilot infrastructure to monitor, plan and support decision makers in the high sensitive areas to desertification”  

The objective of the study, carried out by the Region in collaboration with the “Dipartimento di Scienze dei Sistemi Colturali Forestali e dell'Ambiente” of the University of Basilicata, has been to produce, for the whole territory of Basilicata, the cartography of vegetation cover and forests, the cartography of environmental sensitive areas to desertification and a web site where elaborated data have been published. To produce the cartography of environmental sensitive areas to desertification the methodology MEDALUS - ESAs has been applied, integrated by the most advanced scientific knowledge in the field of monitoring and environmental risks analysis, while the forest cover cartography has been obtained using remote sensing, digital and field data. The produced cartography, integrated in a Geographic Information System dedicated to monitoring and environmental sensitivity analysis, constitute  a modern, efficient, friendly of great potential and detail for the evaluation and  monitoring of the ongoing desertification processes on the regional territory.
