“Elaboration of a Geographic Information System and desertification risk cartography in the territory of Calabria”

The aim of the activity, carried out by ARPACal, was to elaborate the cartography of sensitive areas to desertification in the territory of Calabria at a 1:250.000 scale.
The sources for the basic information used by the ARPACal to implement the methodology MEDALUS have been the following: the climatic data base ARPACal CFS M.Id.Mar. for the Climate Quality Index;  the "Carta della Natura Calabria" for the Vegetation Quality Index; the “Carta dei Suoli della Calabria” produced by ARSSA, used to elaborate the Soil Quality Index and, finally, the ISTAT data base used to determine the Management Quality Index.
The results show that near the Ionic coast there are the most sensitive areas in the territory of the Region. The 51% of the territori of Calabria is at desertifcation risk; 11% of the total is at high risk, including the Piana di Sibari up to the boundary with the Basilicata Region, and also the Marchesato near Crotona and the south coast (from Reggio Calabria to Capo Spartivento).
